Debbie Wright was a singer who was one of the first female members of Parliament-Funkadelic and part of the P-Funk spinoff group Parlet.
Born in Detroit, Deborah Wright joined Parliament-Funkadelic in 1975 along with former James Brown backing vocalist Jeanette Washington. The first album they appeared on was Parliament’s breakthrough LP Mothership Connection (1975).
Along with Mallia Franklin, Wright and Washington made up the P-Funk spin-off group Parlet, who released their debut album Pleasure Principle in 1978. Wright made it through the recording sessions, but had to leave the group before the album’s release due to substance abuse issues.
Wright, Franklin, and Ron Ford were featured vocalists on the album’s epic funk slow jam “Misunderstanding,” which was co-written by Ford, George Clinton, and Bernie Worrell.
On the album’s stellar closing cut “Mr. Melody Man,” co-written by Gary “Mudbone” Cooper and Ron Dunbar, Wright hit impossibly high notes towards the track’s end.
A few days after she passed in 2017, gone too soon at age 66, a moving tribute video was posted on YouTube remembering her P-Funk years.
Happy Heavenly Birthday to the great Debbie Wright.
