Guitarist and songwriter Phil Upchurch has played on a long list of some of the greatest soul and funk records of the 1960s and 70s.
For Curtis Mayfield’s classic 1973 album Back To The World, Upchurch and Mayfield co-wrote the superb jam “Keep On Trippin’.” A funky, laid back instrumental version was the opening cut on Upchurch’s own Lovin’ Feeling LP, released the same year in 1973.
Another highlight from Lovin’ Feeling was the supremely funky jam “Sitar Soul,” which Upchurch wrote and co-produced along with Tommy LiPuma.
Besides Upchurch on guitar, electric sitar, and vocals, the album featured Tennyson Stephens on keyboards, Steve Cobb on drums and Mayfield’s longtime bassist Joseph “Lucky” Scott.

❤️ Upchurch! "Black Gold" on his s/t album is absolutely brilliant. I also love his 'Darkness Darkness' LP, which is super smooth, funky, and as the title hints - at times, quite melancholic.
“Sitar Soul” ❤️
